In the next few weeks, I am headed back to Atlanta for MixNik, an annual gathering of songwriters, producers, engineers, artists, and music industry professionals. The event combines educational workshops, networking opportunities, technology demonstrations, and discussions about the future of music creation, making it one of the more unique events on my calendar each year.
I attended for the first time last year and came away with far more than a notebook full of ideas. The experience challenged my thinking, introduced me to new people, and reminded me how important it is to occasionally step outside of the studio and connect with other creators who share the same passion for music.
As this year’s event approaches, I’ve found myself thinking less about the schedule and more about how much has changed since the last time I attended.
The event itself may look similar, but I don’t.
A Different Chapter
Last year, I attended MixNik as an individual creator looking to learn, connect, and better understand where the music industry was heading. I spent a lot of time absorbing information, exploring new ideas, and stepping outside of my comfort zone.
This year feels different.
Since the last event, I’ve continued building with RBL, expanded our catalog, worked with new artists, and had the opportunity to pursue publishing conversations that once felt much further away. Many of the goals that were simply ideas a year ago are now active projects that require focus, preparation, and execution.
The questions I’m bringing with me this year are different than the ones I brought last year.
The Value Beyond the Sessions
One thing I learned from attending MixNik is that the real value often happens outside the sessions themselves.
Of course, there are always new techniques to learn, new technologies to explore, and industry trends worth paying attention to. But some of the most valuable moments happen during casual conversations in hallways, over lunch, or while sharing experiences with people who understand the challenges of creating music in today’s world.
Sometimes a single conversation can provide more clarity than an entire presentation.
Sometimes hearing another creator’s perspective can completely change how you approach your own work.
Those moments are difficult to predict, which is exactly what makes them so valuable.
Sharing the Experience
Another thing that makes this year different is that I won’t be attending alone.

For years, much of my growth as a songwriter, producer, and engineer happened through individual experiences. This time, I’ll have the opportunity to experience the event alongside someone who shares many of the same goals, challenges, and creative ambitions.
I’m looking forward to comparing notes, discussing ideas, and seeing how we each interpret the lessons and opportunities that come from the event. I have a feeling the conversations on the drive home may be just as valuable as the conversations that happen inside the conference itself.
Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone
One of the biggest lessons I took away from last year’s MixNik had very little to do with music. It had to do with people.
As an introvert, walking into a room full of strangers isn’t always easy for me. Last year’s event pushed me outside my comfort zone and reminded me of the value of making new connections.
I wouldn’t say I’m cured of being an introvert, though. In fact, that’s one of the reasons I convinced my music partner, DJ Merk One, to join me this year. We’ll still be meeting new people and building relationships, but it’ll be nice to share the experience with someone who’s on the same creative journey.
What I’m Hoping to Find
If I’m being honest, I’m not attending MixNik looking for a magic formula.
I’m not expecting a single session to transform my career overnight.
What I’m hoping to find is inspiration, perspective, and connection.
I’m hoping to leave with a few new ideas, a few new relationships, and a renewed sense of excitement about the work we’re building. I’m hoping to learn something that challenges my thinking and pushes me to become a better songwriter, producer, collaborator, and creative partner.
Most importantly, I’m hoping to continue growing.
Because after all these years, that’s still one of the things I love most about music. No matter how much experience you have, there’s always something new to learn.
