Why I Still Make Music After All These Years

Every once in a while, I find myself asking a simple question:

Why am I still doing this?

It’s a fair question. I’ve spent decades writing songs, producing records, recording artists, and chasing creative ideas. Over the years I’ve experienced some wonderful highs, plenty of disappointments, and more than a few moments where it would have been easy to move on to something else.

Yet I continue to come back to music.

The interesting thing is that the reasons I make music today are very different from the reasons that first got me started.

🎙️ Music Gives Me a Voice

One of the biggest reasons I continue creating is that music gives me a voice.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized there are things I want to say, experiences I want to share, and stories I want to preserve. Some of those thoughts become conversations. Some become blog articles like the ones I share here on The Human Side. Others become songs.

Music has always given me a way to communicate things that don’t always fit neatly into everyday conversation. Whether I’m writing a deeply personal song like Faded Polaroid or collaborating with another artist on their vision, music allows me to express ideas, emotions, and perspectives that matter to me.

📖 Legacy Matters More Than Ever

Another reason I continue creating is because legacy has become increasingly important.

I’m not talking about fame or being remembered by millions of people. I’m talking about leaving behind something meaningful.

My songs, my book, this blog, and the projects I’ve been fortunate enough to work on all become part of a story that will hopefully outlive me.

One of the reasons I make a point to write for this blog twice each month is because I want to document the journey while I’m living it. Long after I’m gone, these songs and writings will remain, telling my story in my own words. There is something comforting and powerful about knowing that a small piece of who I am will continue to exist through the work I’ve created.

🤝 Helping Others Reach Their Dreams

I’ve also discovered that some of the greatest satisfaction comes from helping other people achieve their dreams.

Early in my career, most of my focus was naturally on my own goals. Today, some of my favorite moments happen when an artist hears a finished song for the first time, when a songwriter finds the missing piece to an idea, or when a collaboration turns into something none of us expected.

Through my studio work, my production team RBL, and the artists I work with, I’ve learned that creating music is often about much more than the music itself. It’s about helping people find confidence, tell their stories, and bring their ideas to life.

🎛️ I Still Love the Challenge

The truth is, I still genuinely enjoy the challenge.

While I may not be interested in learning a brand-new DAW every year or completely reinventing my workflow, I still love experimenting with new sounds, trying different production approaches, discovering a plugin that sparks an idea, or finding a creative solution to a problem inside a song.

I think many producers and engineers my age can relate to that. At some point, you stop chasing every new piece of technology and start focusing on how to become more creative with the tools you already know and trust.

For me, the excitement has never been about having the newest software. It’s about continuing to grow creatively.

🎵 Final Thoughts

When I really think about it, music has become much more than a hobby, career, or creative outlet.

It has become one of the ways I connect with people, preserve memories, leave something meaningful behind, and continue learning about myself.

That’s why I’m still making music after all these years.

Not because I’m chasing the same dreams I had when I was younger, but because music continues to give me purpose, perspective, and a reason to keep creating.

And honestly, as long as I still have something worth saying, I suspect I’ll keep making music.
