Faded Polaroid: The Story Behind the Song (Exclusive)

Faded Polaroid: The Story Behind the Song (Exclusive)

This one is a little different.

When I released “Faded Polaroid,” I didn’t say much about it.
I just put it out into the world and let it speak for itself.

But for those of you who’ve been following my journey — I wanted to share the story behind it.

🖼️ Where the Idea Came From

The idea started with a simple feeling:

That moment when you look back at a memory…
and it’s still there…
but it doesn’t feel the same anymore.

Not gone.
Not forgotten.
Just… faded.

Like an old Polaroid.

💭 The Real Emotion Behind It

I’ll be honest — this wasn’t a quick write.

This came from reflection.
From loss.
From sitting with thoughts I hadn’t fully processed.

Over the past few months, I lost my father and my uncle, and it gave me a lot of time to slow down and really think.

And when you slow down like that…
memories hit differently.

💔 A Memory I Wish I Could Revisit

One of the biggest inspirations behind “Faded Polaroid” was my uncle Tony.

When I was really young, he loved me deeply — I felt that.
Some of my strongest memories of him are from birthdays and holidays, when he would come around with gifts.

But his gifts were… different.

Not the typical toys you’d expect as a kid.

I remember getting things like:

  • a telescope
  • a microscope
  • a stamp collection
  • science experiment kits

At the time, I didn’t fully get it.

As a kid, I was probably expecting something like a G.I. Joe or an action figure. And if I’m being honest, I don’t think I appreciated those gifts the way I should have.

But looking back now… I see it clearly.

He saw something in me.

He wasn’t just giving me toys —
he was giving me ways to explore, to think, to look deeper… and sometimes, to look farther.

🔭 “A Little Farther, A Little Closer”

There’s a line in the song:

“A little farther… a little closer…”

That line is directly inspired by those moments.

The telescope.
The microscope.

Two completely different ways of seeing the world —
but both about perspective.

And now, that line means even more to me.

It’s about how memories work…

Sometimes they feel right in front of you.
Sometimes they feel miles away.

🕊️ What I Wish I Could Say Now

What really hit me while writing this song…

was realizing that I never got the chance to tell him:

“I get it now.”

I understand what you were trying to give me.
I understand how much you cared.
I understand what you saw in me.

And that feeling —
that mix of gratitude, distance, and regret —
is a big part of what “Faded Polaroid” is about.

🎼 Lyrics — “Faded Polaroid”

Written by Luis Martinez

Verse 1:
He’d leave pieces of a puzzle
Right there waiting at my door.
Never stayed to see me find them—
He just knew there might be more.

Every gift a quiet message,
Saying look beyond the lines…
Teaching me to see the simple,
Long before I saw the signs.

Pre-Hook:
Never knew what you meant…
Never knew at the time.
Now I’m seeing it clearer,
All the things you left behind.

Chorus:
Faded Polaroid…
Still hits me in the chest.
You saw the man I’d be
When I couldn’t see it yet.

A little farther…
A little closer…
Wish I could look again.

A little farther…
A little closer…
Back to where it all began.

Verse 2:
Life kept moving without warning,
And I let the years just run.
Should’ve reached out in the quiet,
Should’ve called you just because.

Funny how the smallest distance
Turns to miles over time…
Now I’m wishing for a moment,
Just to say what’s on my mind.

Chorus:
Faded Polaroid…
Still hits me in the chest.
You saw the man I’d be
When I couldn’t see it yet.

A little farther…
A little closer…
Wish I could look again.

A little farther…
A little closer…
Back to where it all began.

Chant:
I see you now.
I feel you now.

Bridge:
You showed me more than you ever knew…
And I’m thankful for every piece you left.

Chorus:
Faded Polaroid…
Now it feels like you’re still near.
You saw the man I’d be
Long before the man was here.

A little farther…
A little closer…
Now I can breathe again.

A little farther…
A little closer…
Thankful for where we’ve been.

📸 Bonus: The Story Behind the Artwork

There’s one more detail I wanted to share with you…

The artwork for “Faded Polaroid” isn’t just inspired by a moment —
it is the moment.

That photo is actually me and my uncle.

It was taken just a few days before his wedding, where I was part of his wedding party.

At the time, it was just a picture.
A moment captured without thinking much about it.

But now…

It’s one of those memories that means so much more than I ever realized it would.

And in a way, it perfectly represents what this song is about:

A moment frozen in time…
that continues to live on, even as everything else changes.
